After being forced to follow-on following a brilliant century by Dinusha, the hosts showed great resilience on the fourth morning, pushing past initial blows delivered by bowlers Prasidh Krishna and Manav Suthar, who had earlier shared six wickets to dismantle the Sri Lankan batting lineup.

India had initially reduced Sri Lanka to 83 for 2 by lunch, keeping the visitors firmly in command of the match and hunting for a clean-sweep victory in the series under overcast conditions in the Sri Lankan capital.

Despite the morning breakthroughs, Gill looked visibly strained in the field as the Sri Lankan middle order dug in, neutralizing the Indian bowling attack and edging closer to wiping out the deficit entirely before the afternoon session.
