Shubman Gill: India squad for Sri Lanka Tests by Tuesday

Shubman Gill: India squad for Sri Lanka Tests by Tuesday. The Board of Control for Cricket in India will announce the Test squad for the upcoming two-match series in Sri Lanka by Tuesday, July 28. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed to TOI that the selection will happen within the next two days. The first Test is scheduled in Galle from August 15 to 19, followed by the second Test in Colombo from August 23 to 27. This series is expected to be a tough spin challenge for India’s batters, who have struggled against quality spin abroad in recent years.

Shubman Gill will lead the Test side as captain, with the team aiming to perform better on turning tracks in Sri Lanka. The announcement comes after a mixed period for Indian cricket, which included a disappointing white-ball tour of England and Ireland. Under new T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, India lost a T20I series to Ireland for the first time and were whitewashed 4-0 by England. The ODI team, under Shubman Gill’s leadership, lost 2-1 to England in the UK.

However, India bounced back in Zimbabwe with a seven-wicket win in the opening T20I, giving Iyer his first victory as T20I captain after a seven-match winless streak. The BCCI will conduct a review of the England, Ireland, and Zimbabwe tours in early August, after the team returns from Zimbabwe. This review will also decide on the contract extensions of two support staff members—assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate and fielding coach T Dilip—whose two-year contracts have expired.

The review committee will discuss what went wrong in England and assess the performances across all formats. Shubman Gill, as Test captain, will be a central figure in India’s plans moving forward. The Sri Lanka Tests offer a chance for the team to rebuild and find form, with the focus on adapting to spin-friendly conditions. The series will be a key test for the new leadership and coaching staff under head coach Gautam Gambhir.
