Mahindra Chakan Plant: 30 Lakh Vehicles Milestone

Mahindra Chakan Plant: 30 Lakh Vehicles Milestone marks a significant achievement for Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., as its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Chakan has now produced over three million vehicles. The landmark vehicle was the BE 6, Mahindra’s most advanced flagship electric SUV, showcasing the plant’s shift toward a future-ready hub that supports both internal-combustion and electric mobility. Since its first vehicle rolled out in December 2009, the Chakan plant has become one of Mahindra’s most important manufacturing sites. Notably, the latest one million vehicles were produced in just 27 months, nearly four times faster than the first million, which took 107 months.

R Velusamy, President of Automotive Business at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said, “The rollout of our three-millionth vehicle, the BE 6, from Chakan marks a proud milestone. The acceleration from 107 months for our first million to just 27 months for the latest million reflects the growing trust of our customers and the dedication of our people, partners, and suppliers.” He highlighted that the Chakan plant combines Industry 4.0 technologies such as artificial intelligence, IoT, 5G connectivity, and advanced robotics, along with Lean and TPM practices. These capabilities ensure world-class quality, agility, and scale while promoting responsible manufacturing.

Spread across 657 acres, the Chakan plant manufactures 19 models and over 450 variants, including ICE vehicles, electric vehicles, and commercial vehicles. It employs around 1,500 robots with over 98% automation in the body shop, along with robotic painting and sealer application. The facility also uses real-time weld monitoring, 3D component scanning, and “No Fault Forward” quality gateways. Sustainability is central to operations, with more than 50% of energy needs met through renewables and EV manufacturing running on 100% renewable energy. The plant is water positive, returning 131% of water used back to nature, and is certified as Zero Waste to Landfill.

Almost all models made at Chakan support Mahindra’s international operations, with exports to markets like South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. This milestone reinforces Mahindra’s commitment to building world-class products in India for both domestic and global customers. The Mahindra Chakan Plant: 30 Lakh Vehicles Milestone exemplifies how the facility remains at the heart of the company’s manufacturing excellence, driving innovation and sustainable growth for the future.
