Mahindra Chakan: 3 Millionth Vehicle Milestone marks another significant achievement for the Indian automaker. Mahindra has announced that its manufacturing facility in Chakan, Maharashtra, has produced its three-millionth vehicle. The milestone vehicle is the Mahindra BE 6, the company’s flagship electric SUV, highlighting the plant’s growing role in both internal combustion engine and electric vehicle production.
The Chakan plant began operations in December 2009 and has since become one of Mahindra’s largest manufacturing hubs. According to the company, the most recent one million vehicles were produced in just 27 months, a significant reduction compared to the 107 months taken to manufacture the first million vehicles. This achievement reflects growing customer demand and better manufacturing efficiency, as noted by R. Velusamy, President of Automotive Business at Mahindra & Mahindra.
Spread across 657 acres, the facility currently produces 19 vehicle models and over 450 variants, including passenger vehicles, electric SUVs and commercial vehicles. Seven assembly lines allow the plant to manufacture multiple products on a common production platform, providing greater flexibility. Mahindra has integrated advanced technologies like Industry 4.0 systems, artificial intelligence, IoT, 5G connectivity and digital traceability. Around 1,500 robots support operations, with body shop automation exceeding 98 percent.
Sustainability remains a key focus. More than half of the plant’s energy needs come from renewable sources, and its electric vehicle production is entirely powered by renewable electricity. The facility is water positive and has achieved Zero Waste to Landfill certification. Besides domestic supply, the plant exports to countries including South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
Mahindra Chakan: 3 Millionth Vehicle Milestone demonstrates the plant’s evolution and its central role in the company’s future strategy. This success highlights how advanced manufacturing and sustainability can work together to meet growing demand.
