Jasprit Bumrah: Fitness Boost Ahead of Sri Lanka Tests as India’s pace spearhead begins a cautious return to full workload. With the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka starting August 15, Bumrah is gradually increasing his bowling intensity at the Centre of Excellence after a knee issue flagged during the England ODIs. The team management is prioritizing his readiness to handle the demands of the longer format.
Bumrah, who has played minimal red-ball cricket since November, developed swelling in his knee before the Lord’s ODI. However, the BCCI medical staff is confident he will be fit for the opener in Galle. A source told TOI that Bumrah will start bowling this week, with his workload carefully monitored. “He needs to get used to bowling longer spells again. These two Tests are vital for WTC qualification,” the source added, noting that dropping points now would threaten India’s final berth.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill is addressing a chronic neck issue with external specialists, a problem that sidelined him during the South Africa series. The discomfort flares up during long innings, but Gill is reportedly improving through ongoing treatment. His absence was deeply felt against South Africa, and he has taken a cautious route to resolve the issue permanently.
Sai Sudharsan, India’s Test No. 3, is also on the fitness watchlist. He will resume batting at the CoE next week following a hamstring injury, with positive initial reports on his availability. As India look to stay alive in the WTC race, managing the fitness of these key players will be crucial to fielding a full-strength squad in Sri Lanka. A fully fit Bumrah remains the cornerstone of their bowling attack and the team’s best hope for a series win.
