Viswanathan Anand: FIDE interim president after EU sanctions sideline Dvorkovich. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) President Arkady Dvorkovich has stepped aside from his role after being included in the European Union’s latest sanctions list related to Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. This decision means Viswanathan Anand, FIDE Deputy President and former world champion, will serve as interim president until the sanctions are lifted or overturned.
In a statement, Dvorkovich described the sanctions as unfair and confirmed he would challenge them legally. He said his temporary suspension would ensure the smooth functioning of FIDE. “I consider this decision unlawful and unfair,” he stated, adding that remaining in office under sanctions could hinder the federation’s operations. Under Article 19.2 of the FIDE Charter, Anand now takes over as interim president. The FIDE Council accepted Dvorkovich’s decision, confirming he will not exercise presidential powers while sanctions remain.
The All India Chess Federation (AICF) President Nitin Narang welcomed Viswanathan Anand’s new role, expressing confidence in his leadership. “Vishy sir has earned the respect of the global chess community through his integrity, wisdom, and lifelong service,” Narang wrote on X. He added that under Viswanathan Anand, FIDE will continue to maintain stability and good governance.
Meanwhile, India announced its squads for the FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from September 17 to 27. Defending champions India will be led by world champion D Gukesh in the open section, with R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Nihal Sarin, and Vidit Gujrathi. The women’s team, headlined by Koneru Humpy, includes R Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal, and Savitha Shri B. FIDE confirmed all its activities and tournaments will continue without interruption under Viswanathan Anand’s interim leadership.
