India Cricket Dominates Day 2 as Padikkal Hits 167 in Galle Test
Devdutt Padikkal delivered a masterclass in patient batting to keep India cricket firmly in the driver’s seat during a rain-interrupted second day of the first Test in Galle. Despite the gloomy conditions and frequent weather disruptions, Padikkal anchored the innings with a brilliant career-best 167. His disciplined approach ensured the visitors maintained their composure throughout a stop-start day that eventually saw them reach 460/9 by the time the umpires called stumps.
Dominating Day For India Cricket
The morning session in Sri Lanka was largely neutralized by persistent rain, forcing a delayed start that condensed the day’s play. Once action finally resumed, the partnership between Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel proved pivotal in building a formidable total. Jurel provided crucial support, contributing a steady half-century to ensure India continued to consolidate their position while avoiding unnecessary risks against a damp pitch and overcast skies.
Speaking after his marathon effort, Padikkal candidly admitted he was ready to head back to bed after such an exhausting stint at the crease. He noted that the team’s tactical approach was focused on stability rather than chasing aggressive runs, a strategy that allowed them to frustrate the Sri Lankan bowlers. Jurel echoed this sentiment, confirming the dressing room’s mandate was to avoid playing “bonkers” cricket and instead focus on batting through the difficult conditions to maximize their total.
By the end of the day, India sat at 460/9, having successfully weathered the storm both literally and figuratively. While the weather remains a lingering threat to the remainder of the Test match, the visitors have set a strong platform. The team’s ability to extract runs during a condensed window of play has left the home side facing an uphill battle once the match resumes in Galle.
