Injury Crisis: How Constant Niggles Hamper 2027 World Cup Plans

Injury Crisis: How Constant Niggles Hamper 2027 World Cup Plans is becoming a pressing concern for the Indian cricket team. Captain Shubman Gill expressed clear frustration after the Lord’s defeat in the third ODI, highlighting that key players are repeatedly unavailable. The injury crisis has forced India to field constantly changing combinations, disrupting their preparation for next year’s ODI World Cup.

Gill noted that from the original squad announced, at least five players were missing from the final match. Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy are both at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for rehabilitation, while Harshit Rana has suffered two setbacks in six months. The spin department has also been hit, with Washington Sundar and Varun Chakravarthy both sidelined by injuries. Even star pacer Jasprit Bumrah played only two ODIs in the England series before being ruled out.

“If you keep the World Cup as the goal, when players cannot finish even a short series, it becomes difficult,” Gill said. He pointed out that constant niggles, sometimes discovered on match morning, leave the team unsure whether to field partially fit bowlers. This injury crisis undermines planning, especially for the 2027 World Cup, where India would need to play 11 consecutive matches to win the title.

As of July 20, Pandya, Reddy, Chakravarthy, and Rana are in Bengaluru for rehab, with Sundar set to join them. Four of these five were part of India’s Champions Trophy-winning squad. For India to succeed in the ODI World Cup, they must solve this injury crisis and ensure their key players spend more time on the field than off it.
