Hair loss or hair thinning: Surgeon explains the difference

Hair loss or hair thinning: Surgeon explains the difference between these common concerns and what to do next. According to Dr Mayank Singh, celebrity hair transplant surgeon and founder of Crown, thinning hair often appears first, prompting many to rethink their hair care routine. Dr Mayank notes that while temporary hair fall stems from stress, diet, or hormones, hair thinning signals inherited balding, especially if it lasts beyond three months.

Temporary hair fall usually resolves with better nutrition, stress management, and gentle scalp care, as follicles remain alive. However, genetic thinning, affecting half of men over 50 and many older women, requires medical attention. Dr Mayank warns that popular products like serums, vitamins, and shampoos rarely reactivate dormant roots, with only half showing minor benefits. He emphasizes that biotin supplements only help if a deficiency is confirmed.

For hair thinning treatments, Dr Mayank suggests low-level laser therapy works best alongside minoxidil, while platelet-rich plasma shows promise for early hair loss. Newer options like exosome injections or stem cells lack sufficient evidence for routine use. If follicles stop functioning permanently, transplants may restore lost hair but cannot protect thinning strands still at risk.

Starting early makes a difference. If you notice persistent thinning beyond three months, consult a professional rather than relying on online fixes. Acting quickly with proven treatments offers the best chance to preserve natural hair.
