The Odyssey: Will it beat Nolan’s top film? Christopher Nolan’s latest epic is delivering a box office performance that has surprised even the most optimistic industry observers. Despite initial backlash over casting choices, the film has become a massive hit since its theatrical release. After a strong first weekend, weekday holds were extraordinarily strong, pushing its domestic first-week total near $200 million.
What makes Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey even more remarkable is its second weekend projection. Industry estimates peg the second weekend at a stunning $85 million, a figure that actually exceeds the opening weekend of Nolan’s previous hit, Oppenheimer. The projected drop from the first weekend is a mere 32%, an astonishingly low number for a blockbuster of this scale. At this pace, the film is tracking for a domestic finish of over $500 million and a worldwide total exceeding $1 billion.
There is now a real possibility that The Odyssey will become Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises. Whether it also becomes the highest-grossing R-rated film depends on its competition, particularly with the upcoming release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The movie’s incredible word-of-mouth and repeat viewings are driving this historic run.
In conclusion, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is not just a critical success; it is a box office juggernaut. Its ability to hold audiences week after week, with a drop far better than most tentpoles, suggests it will rewrite Nolan’s own box office record books. The film’s journey has been nothing short of incredible.
