India head coach Gautam Gambhir has signalled that the team’s top batters may need a break from white-ball cricket in the buildup to the tour of New Zealand, justifying the caution with a packed schedule that leaves almost no breathing room between formats.

Speaking to broadcaster JioStar ahead of India’s home season on September 23, 2026, Gambhir laid out the scale of the challenge: India’s New Zealand tour includes 12 games across formats, with the final ODI in Tauranga on November 16 followed by the first Test in Wellington just three days later, on November 19. That turnaround leaves little time for batters to mentally and technically reset between white-ball aggression and red-ball discipline.

“Often for Test match preparation, you will have to give your batters a break as well from white-ball,” Gambhir said, adding that the era of the do-everything three-format cricketer is fading. “You will have very few three-format players in the coming times, because you will have to keep rotating,” he explained, naming red-ball cricket as the team’s core priority: “I’m a very big believer that a strong Test cricketing nation is a strong cricketing nation.” Players in the frame for possible rotation include Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Reddy.

Gambhir also touched on managing Hardik Pandya’s workload and praised Shubman Gill’s growth as captain, noting the advantage of having senior pros like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli still around for guidance. With selectors now expected to weigh format-specific rest days against squad depth, how India manages this rotation could shape both its white-ball form and its Test results well into the New Zealand series.
