Queen 2: JioStar Denies Lawsuit, Claims Original Film has become the centre of a legal dispute in the Bombay High Court. 9 Phantom Studios has filed a Rs. 250 crore lawsuit against JioStar, alleging that Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming project is an unauthorised sequel that infringes on the intellectual property rights of the 2014 film Queen. The production house claims it never gave consent for this new film.
In response, JioStar has denied all allegations, firmly stating that Queen 2 is an original, independent story. According to a statement published by Mid-Day, JioStar said, “StarStudio18 is presently working with Ms Kangana Ranaut on a fresh production that is an original, independent story. It has no narrative, character or creative connection to any prior work, and is neither a sequel nor a prequel to any existing title.” The company emphasised that the word ‘Queen’ is a common English noun and cannot be exclusively owned by any party.
JioStar further argued that any claim of exclusive ownership over a common noun has no basis in law. The company stated it is well aware of the litigation and will defend its position through the appropriate legal process. The statement concluded, “We have full confidence in the merits of our case.” This legal battle highlights the complexities of intellectual property rights in the film industry.
Queen 2: JioStar Denies Lawsuit, Claims Original Film remains a developing story, with both parties preparing for court proceedings. The outcome will likely influence how similar IP disputes are handled in the future. For now, JioStar stands by its position that the project is entirely original.
