Dr Manish Kumar Tomar: Expert Tips for Monsoon Gut Health

Dr Manish Kumar Tomar: Expert Tips for Monsoon Gut Health explains why digestive problems surge during the rainy season. According to Dr Manish Kumar Tomar, senior consultant in gastroenterology at Medanta, Noida, the combination of high humidity, contaminated water, and rapid bacterial growth creates a breeding ground for gastrointestinal troubles. The monsoon season brings several ailments, particularly digestive complaints that can range from mild acidity to severe infections.

Dr Tomar lists common monsoon-related digestive issues including acute gastroenteritis, food poisoning, typhoid, cholera, acidity, indigestion, and IBS flare-ups. He notes that flooding and waterlogging can contaminate groundwater, while humid weather accelerates food spoilage. Poor hand hygiene and consumption of improperly cooked food further increase infection risks. Symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and fever become more frequent during this time.

To maintain monsoon gut health, Dr Tomar recommends drinking only filtered, boiled, or purified water. He advises washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly, preferring freshly cooked hot meals, and avoiding cut fruits, uncovered foods, and unhygienic street food. Proper hand hygiene before eating is essential. Limiting oily, spicy, and fried foods while staying hydrated with plenty of water can help. Adding probiotics like curd to the diet may also support digestive health if tolerated.

Dr Tomar emphasizes seeking medical attention for persistent diarrhoea, vomiting, repetitive fever, blood in stools, or signs of dehydration. The expert warns that digestive illnesses spike during the monsoon due to overlapping environmental risks. Practicing these precautions can help protect gut health throughout the rainy season. For any concerning symptoms, consulting a doctor remains the safest course of action.
