Story: Set in 2001, the film follows Ravuri Venkatesh alias RV (Arun Dev), a city boy who loves cricket but lives under his father’s (Harshavardhan) strict rules, where only marks and ranks matter. During the summer holidays, RV gets to visit his grandmother’s (Jayasudha) village. There he meets Kasi Venkateswarlu alias KV (Rohan), a fatherless village boy living with his mother, who leases mango trees and works hard with one small dream: to buy his mother a saree with his own money. How does their friendship grow? Does KV fulfil his wish? Can RV change his father’s thinking? That is for you to watch.

Analysis: Grandma’s house, village life and summer holidays: with these three elements, director Srikar Nayan takes every viewer straight back to childhood. The first half flows breezily with the kids’ mischief, cricket games and fun moments, and the interval scene lifts the curiosity. The second half delivers strong emotions; KV’s struggle for his mother and RV’s growing bond with his grandmother are genuinely moving. The film touches on academic pressure on children and the value of small wishes naturally, without preaching. With no violence or bloodshed, it is a clean, peaceful film the whole family can enjoy together.

Performances: Rohan Roy is the soul of the film as KV. He brings a village boy’s energy and spot-on comic timing, and handles the emotional scenes with a maturity beyond his age. Arun Dev beautifully portrays RV’s innocence, his fear of his father and the freedom he finds in the village. Their friendship is the heart of the film. Jayasudha lends grace and warmth to the grandmother’s role. Harshavardhan as the strict father and Vasuki Anand as the mother are natural, while Rajeev Kanakala, Khushi, Harshini and Ramana Bhargav do full justice to their parts.

Technical Aspects: Sai Prakash’s cinematography is a big strength, capturing the lush Godavari locations and village beauty like a picture postcard. The art department recreates the 2001 era convincingly. Sinjith Yerramilli’s songs are pleasant, with the ‘School Song’ instantly taking you back to school days, and the background score elevates the emotional moments. Dialogues such as the line contrasting a ‘job’ for the educated with ‘labour’ for the uneducated leave you thinking. Though a small film, producer Dheeraj Mogilineni has not compromised anywhere, and the production values are rich.

Plus Points:

  • Natural performances by Rohan Roy and Arun Dev
  • The friendship of the two boys and its emotional connect
  • Jayasudha as the grandmother
  • Nostalgia that brings back childhood memories
  • Godavari village visuals and cinematography
  • Sinjith Yerramilli’s songs and background score
  • Thought-provoking dialogues
  • Clean content for the whole family

Verdict: Summer Holidays is a heartwarming family entertainer that gives kids fun and grown-ups their childhood memories back. Anyone who spent summer vacations at their grandparents’ village will instantly connect with it. A lovely film to watch in theatres with your children.
