Shubman Gill: Injured skipper walks off in ODI chase

Shubman Gill: Injured skipper walks off in ODI chase. The India captain retired hurt after suffering severe cramps in his right leg during the first ODI against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Gill was batting on 80 off 75 balls when the discomfort struck in the 26th over. After facing a delivery from Josh Tongue that beat his outside edge, Gill removed his gloves, crouched on the pitch, and clutched his right leg before walking off. Shubman Gill had just built a crucial 100-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer to put India in control of the 259-run chase. Washington Sundar came in as the replacement batter.

Following the departure of Shubman Gill, England fought back immediately. In the next over, Shreyas Iyer was run out after a mix of quick running and sharp fielding from Harry Brook. Washington Sundar pushed a delivery from Jofra Archer toward mid-on, prompting Iyer to set off for a run. While running to the striker’s end, Iyer changed his path to avoid being hit by the ball, costing him valuable time. Brook collected the ball cleanly and hit the stumps directly, catching Iyer short.

Earlier, England were cruising at 61 without loss before India triggered a collapse that left them at 107 for 6 by the 22nd over. Joe Root and Liam Dawson then rescued England with a 121-run stand for the seventh wicket. Root scored 76 off 76 balls, while Dawson made a career-best 68 off 83 deliveries to help hosts post 258. The absence of Shubman Gill during the chase proved pivotal as India lost momentum, highlighting the skipper’s importance to the batting lineup.

The injury to Shubman Gill overshadowed what had been a promising start for India. With the series opener now under England’s control, India’s batting depth will be tested in the coming matches. The team will hope for a swift recovery of their captain as they look to bounce back in the remainder of the ODI series.
