Shapoor Zadran: Afghanistan cricket mourns a hero

Shapoor Zadran: Afghanistan cricket mourns a hero after the former fast bowler passed away at 38 in New Delhi on Tuesday following a prolonged illness. The Afghanistan Cricket Board confirmed his death, which came after a battle with stage four haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a rare condition causing severe inflammation. Zadran had been in an ICU since May, with his visa fast-tracked to India in January thanks to support from star Rashid Khan and ACB chairman Mirwais Ashraf.

The news sparked heartbreaking scenes as teammates including Rashid Khan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Ibrahim Zadran broke down while paying final respects to Shapoor Zadran. Former captain Asghar Afghan traveled regularly to New Delhi during his treatment, while Rashid Khan remained in constant contact with doctors. Initially showing signs of recovery, Zadran’s condition worsened due to repeated infections, dengue, and a drop in red blood cells.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board paid tribute, stating Shapoor Zadran served with honor and courage, leaving an important mark on the history of Afghanistan cricket. His fighting spirit inspired many young cricketers and followers worldwide. The board extended heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire Afghan cricket community, emphasizing his loss is deeply felt.

Though his time was cut short, Shapoor Zadran’s legacy as a hero of Afghanistan cricket will forever remain alive in the hearts of the nation and the cricketing world. His contributions, both on and off the field, continue to inspire generations to dream bigger.
