The government has proposed severe punishments for those involved in paper leaks, increasing the penalty from the previous 3 to 5 years imprisonment to 10 years in jail and a fine of up to Rs 10 crore. Additionally, plans include fast track courts to deliver verdicts within 90 days.
Prime Minister Modi addressed the matter in a social media video, expressing concern that paper leaks harm students’ futures. Previously handled under the Public Examinations Act, these cases will now be treated as organized crime under the new provisions. Service providers who hide details of the crime face a fine of Rs 1 crore. The bill was approved in the cabinet meeting.
Over the past decade, more than 150 paper leak cases have been reported nationwide, prompting leaders like Rahul Gandhi to highlight the issue. The new law targets not only those who leak papers but also those who assist them, ensuring severe punishment for all involved. Each case must be concluded within three months in fast track courts to impose immediate penalties.
