Mumbai Rains: An elderly man lost his life after falling into an open manhole during heavy downpour in Mumbai. Aslam Isak Shaikh, aged 60, was talking on his phone when he slipped into the uncovered manhole on Khairani Road near Sanman Hotel in Chandivali around 12:30 pm on Thursday. Locals reported that the strong water flow from Mumbai Rains swept him away before he could be rescued. Rescue teams and officials arrived promptly and placed a ladder into the manhole to search for him, but only his umbrella and sandals were recovered.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials stated that the high water level caused by Mumbai Rains made it extremely difficult to determine Shaikh’s location. They are now considering registering a case against the negligent contractor responsible for the open manhole. This tragic incident adds to the growing list of casualties from the ongoing Mumbai Rains, which have already claimed other lives in the city.
In separate rain-related incidents, an 11-year-old boy died when a tree fell on a school bus in Chembur, and a 51-year-old man lost his life after a balcony collapsed from a third-floor building. The intensity of Mumbai Rains has led to over 200 mm of rainfall in many areas within 24 hours, causing severe waterlogging on roads and bringing traffic to a standstill. The Meteorological Department has warned that heavy rains may continue until Friday morning.
As the impact of Mumbai Rains persists, evacuation operations are still underway across the city. Officials are urging residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.
