Ireland hangover: India chose to bat first against England in the opening T20I, a decision that surprised many given the overcast conditions at Chester-le-Street. Dinesh Karthik believes the recent 2-0 T20I series defeat to Ireland heavily influenced this call. India had opted to field first in both matches against Ireland but failed to chase down targets, losing the first by 34 runs and the second by just one run. Karthik said the Ireland hangover played a role, as India decided to avoid chasing and instead set a target.
India’s plan worked well initially, as they posted 189/7 in 20 overs. Shreyas Iyer led the way with a 47-ball 68, while opener Abhishek Sharma scored 59. Shivam Dube added an unbeaten 42 off 21 balls. However, heavy rain ended the match early, with umpires calling it off before a five-over game could be completed.
The Ireland hangover was evident in India’s cautious approach, as the team prioritized batting first to avoid a repeat of their chasing woes. Shreyas Iyer also crossed 5,000 international runs during his innings, a milestone that adds to his consistent performances across formats.
The second T20I of the five-match series is scheduled for July 4 in Manchester. India will aim to learn from both the Ireland defeat and this rain-affected match to adapt their strategy for the remaining games.
