Indian Hockey Jersey: Why Saffron Replaces Blue has been officially confirmed by Hockey India for the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, a shift designed to address both technical challenges on the pitch and to honor national symbolism. The federation announced that the decision, which applies to both the men’s and women’s teams, replaces the iconic blue kit to improve player visibility during matches.
The primary reason behind the change is that the traditional blue jersey blended too easily with the standard blue synthetic turf now used in international competitions. According to a statement from Hockey India, this visual similarity hindered on-field clarity for the athletes. After consultations, coaches and players suggested alternatives like yellow, but saffron was ultimately chosen for its prominence on the pitch and its representation of courage and sacrifice as part of the National Flag.
This is not the first time the team has altered its look. Hockey India noted that the jersey color was changed to yellow for the 2014 World Cup and to sky blue in 2018, proving that adaptability is part of the team’s history. The new saffron design features navy blue accents inspired by the Ashoka Chakra, Mandala patterns for cultural heritage, and Tricolour piping, with ‘INDIA’ written in Devanagari script.
The decision has not been without criticism. Former captain Viren Rasquinha expressed disappointment, arguing that the blue jersey represents the team’s legacy and identity, similar to the way Argentina is associated with football. He insisted his concern is about pride, not politics. Ultimately, while the switch aims to boost performance and national pride, it remains to be seen if the fans will accept this new chapter in Indian hockey history.
