Health IDs: India Reaches Milestone with 900 Million IDs & 1.8 Lakh Centers
India’s national healthcare landscape has reached a monumental milestone with the creation of over 900 million health IDs under the Digital Mission, alongside the widespread expansion of grassroots medical facilities across the country. This massive digital adoption reflects a transformative shift in how citizens access, manage, and share their medical records securely across various care networks.
The rapid scaling of the digital health ecosystem stems from the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, which aims to bridge existing gaps in public medical delivery and streamline patient identification. Complementing this digital infrastructure is the nationwide network of Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, totaling approximately 1.8 lakh centers, designed to bring primary healthcare services closer to rural and underserved populations.
Under the current framework, nearly 90 crore individuals now possess unique digital identifiers, facilitating seamless access to tertiary care insurance schemes and diagnostic histories. This integration allows patients to bypass traditional bureaucratic hurdles, ensuring that medical documentation remains accurate, portable, and readily available during emergencies or routine consultations at participating hospitals.
Looking ahead, health authorities plan to further optimize the unified portal to encourage universal adoption and deeper integration with private and public providers. As digital health IDs become increasingly mandatory for institutional visits, the ongoing expansion of primary care facilities and secure data networks will likely fortify India’s broader public health infrastructure for years to come.
