Gemini plans: Free Users Drop to Flash-Lite on Oct 9

Gemini Plans Change Free Users

Google is reshuffling which Gemini models people can use in the Gemini app, and the changes begin on October 9. Free users and AI Plus subscribers are the two groups affected, while higher paid tiers keep their current access.

Under the new arrangement, the free experience will be restricted to Gemini Flash-Lite. Flash and Pro are removed from the free tier, so anyone using Gemini without a subscription will be limited to the lightest model in the family.

The AI Plus plan also loses ground. Subscribers will no longer be able to use Gemini Pro, although Flash-Lite and Flash remain available. Google has said AI Plus subscribers will receive an email when the change takes effect for their account, which means the exact timing may differ from October 9.

There is no reduction for AI Pro and AI Ultra. Both plans keep access to Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro. The changes apply to the Gemini app used with personal accounts.

For users in India who rely on the free app for study, writing or quick research, the practical effect is a lighter model for everyday prompts. Anyone who depends on Pro for longer reasoning or coding tasks will need to move to a higher paid plan to keep it. Google has not detailed usage limits or pricing changes alongside this update, so subscribers should watch for the email notice and check their plan page after October 9.
