Early menopause at 30: Chandigarh gynaecologist explains why this condition can occur much earlier than expected. Menopause is typically associated with women in their late 40s or early 50s, but symptoms like irregular periods, hot flashes, and sleep disturbances can appear in a woman’s 30s. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Reema Sircar, gynaecologist and director at Indira IVF Hospital Limited, Chandigarh, reveals that early menopause before age 40-45 is called premature menopause or premature ovarian insufficiency. This occurs when ovaries lose normal function earlier than expected.
Dr Reema notes that one challenge with early menopause is its symptoms often go unrecognized. Changes in menstrual cycles—becoming irregular or stopping—are among the first signs. Women may also experience hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, reduced libido, mood swings, and concentration issues. Because these symptoms overlap with stress and lifestyle factors, diagnosis can be delayed.
The exact cause of early menopause is not always known, but genetics play a role, especially with a family history. Autoimmune conditions and medical treatments like chemotherapy or radiation can damage ovaries. Smoking is another risk factor. In many cases, no clear cause is identified.
Early menopause impacts fertility and long-term health. Estrogen decline at a younger age increases risks of osteoporosis and heart disease. Dr Reema emphasizes that timely diagnosis and medical management are crucial for overall well-being.
