Dr Kunal Sood: 5 Nail Health Warning Signs

Dr Kunal Sood: 5 Nail Health Warning Signs, a Maryland-based physician in Anesthesiology and Interventional Pain Medicine, recently shared crucial insights on Instagram about what your nails might reveal about your overall health. While manicures and pedicures keep nails looking polished, their natural condition can offer significant clues about underlying medical issues. Dr. Sood posted these five warning signs on August 8, emphasizing that while these indicators are valuable, they cannot replace professional diagnosis.

The first sign is spoon-shaped nails, or koilonychia. According to Dr. Sood, this condition is classically linked to long-standing iron deficiency. He explained that iron deficiency affects nail growth and keratin formation, but appearance alone isn’t enough for a diagnosis. Blood tests, including ferritin levels and a complete blood count, are typically necessary to confirm the issue. The second sign involves small white spots, which usually result from minor injury to the nail matrix, often from bumping, manicures, or biting. However, Dr. Sood cautioned that if these spots appear without reason, they might indicate calcium or zinc deficiency, though these signs are not entirely reliable.

A third critical indicator is a new, persistent dark streak on one nail. While most streaks are benign, Dr. Sood warned that this could occasionally represent nail melanoma, a type of cancer. Characteristics like widening, irregular colour, pigment reaching surrounding skin, or nail damage increase concern and warrant prompt evaluation. Fourth, thick yellow nails are commonly caused by fungal infections, especially in toenails. However, the physician pointed out that trauma, psoriasis, and eczema can look similar, so appearance alone cannot confirm a fungal infection.

Finally, Dr. Sood highlighted clubbing of the fingertips, which is the enlargement of fingertips with increased nail curvature. He stated that new clubbing may be associated with lung disease, certain heart conditions, inflammatory bowel disease, or liver disease, and should be medically evaluated rather than assumed normal. In conclusion, while these nail health warning signs are informative, they are not a substitute for professional medical advice. Always consult your doctor for a proper diagnosis and evaluation.
