Diesel Cars Regain Market Share: E20 Fuel Concerns Accelerate Shift

Diesel cars regain market share: Indian passenger vehicle buyers are increasingly turning back to diesel, with market share for the fuel type rising to 19.39% in FY27 from 18.08% in the previous year. Vehicle registration data from Vahan and FADA shows average monthly diesel registrations jumped nearly 15% to around 82,000 units from about 71,400 units in FY26. Industry executives point to several factors driving this shift, including the sustained popularity of mid-size and full-size SUVs and rising petrol prices, which make diesel more cost-effective for high-mileage users.

Dealers note that some customers are choosing diesel cars specifically due to concerns over the long-term use of E20 petrol in older or non-compatible vehicles. However, manufacturers like Tata Motors stop short of calling ethanol-blended fuel the main cause of the diesel revival. Tata Motors Managing Director Shailesh Chandra stated that while diesel demand is climbing, most incremental growth comes from CNG and electric vehicles, while petrol volumes decline. Mercedes-Benz India reports diesel accounts for around 40% of its sales, with CEO Santosh Iyer citing total cost of ownership and rising petrol prices as key factors.

The availability of new diesel-powered SUVs has also supported this trend. Over the past two years, manufacturers launched or updated diesel variants of models like the Mahindra XUV 3XO, Tata Curvv, Hyundai Creta, and Kia Seltos. Meanwhile, the government’s biofuel roadmap evolves: while E20 petrol is nationwide, diesel remains outside the ethanol blending program, with isobutanol being explored as a future alternative at up to 15% blending.

In conclusion, diesel cars regain market share reflects their continued relevance for buyers prioritizing torque, long-distance efficiency, and lower running costs. Even as electrification and alternative fuels grow, diesel’s role in specific segments remains strong, driven by SUV demand and consumer caution toward E20 petrol.
