Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has officially announced that the controversial Parandur airport project has been completely scrapped by the state government, siding directly with local protesters who campaigned against the greenfield development near Chennai.

The administration decided to drop the location after facing sustained resistance from farmers and environmental activists concerned about the protection of local water bodies. Rather than pushing forward at that specific site, the state is now actively searching for an alternative location for a second airport while simultaneously planning a fifth terminal at the existing Chennai airport.
Alongside canceling the aviation hub, Chief Minister Vijay used the major policy address to roll out popular welfare measures for residents across Tamil Nadu. The government committed to reimbursing the cost of three LPG cylinders annually for households starting from the Pongal festival in 2027, alongside expanding free bus travel programs for women.
By abandoning the blueprint at Parandur, the administration aims to resolve years of deadlock over regional infrastructure expansion. Officials will propose a brand-new site in the near future that balances aviation growth with the safeguarding of agricultural lands and local communities.
