A Glasgow-based Indian restaurant, Mister Singh’s India – The Home of Curry, deleted its Instagram account following a complaint from Lovlina Borgohain. The issue arose when the Indian boxing team visited the venue to celebrate their record-breaking Commonwealth Games 2026 campaign, which yielded ten medals, including seven golds.
During the celebratory dinner, Borgohain, who hails from Assam and won a silver medal, noticed that the restaurant’s napkins and exterior signage displayed an inaccurate map of India. The map omitted the entire Northeast region of the country. A video of the boxer politely addressing the issue with the management quickly went viral, prompting widespread criticism online. In the footage, Borgohain expressed her distress, stating, Please don’t take this the wrong way. I felt a little hurt… our North East is missing… that really hurts us.
Following the backlash, the restaurant issued a public apology, acknowledging the error and promising to correct the logo. In their statement, they said, We would like to unequivocally apologise for the depiction of the wrong map of India. We will take immediate steps to correct this. They also thanked the team for their visit. However, shortly after the apology, the restaurant’s Instagram account was deleted, with the establishment stating they were proud of their heritage for 32 years.
Boxing Federation of India president Ajay Singh, who was present, clarified that there was no confrontation. He told PTI that the mistake was pointed out amicably, and the restaurant accepted it and assured corrections. The incident highlights the importance of accurate representations of national borders, especially for businesses serving international guests. The restaurant, which has hosted many dignitaries, has pledged to update its branding to ensure the map is correct in the future.
