Cotton buds: Why They Harm Your Ears. Many people use cotton buds to clean their ears, thinking it is a necessary hygiene practice. However, ENT specialists warn that this habit can cause serious damage. Earwax, or cerumen, is a natural protective substance, and removing it too frequently can lead to problems rather than benefits.
Dr Saloni Rajyaguru, an ENT specialist at Zynova Shalby Hospital in Mumbai, explained that earwax acts as the ear’s natural defence system. It traps dust, dirt, bacteria, and insects before they reach the eardrum. It also keeps the ear canal moisturised, preventing dryness and irritation. Therefore, constant cleaning is not required. Using cotton buds often pushes wax deeper into the ear canal, causing blockages.
The consequences of using cotton buds include wax blockage, ear pain, reduced hearing, ringing in the ears, dizziness, or even damage to the eardrum. In severe cases, inserting objects can puncture the eardrum. Earwax should only be removed when medically recommended, such as for symptoms like hearing loss, fullness, pain, or persistent ringing. This procedure should be done professionally.
For healthy ear cleaning, avoid inserting any objects into the ear canal. Instead, clean only the outer ear with a soft, damp cloth. Do not rub too hard. If you experience ear pain, discharge, hearing difficulty, or a feeling of blockage, consult a doctor. In conclusion, cotton buds are harmful to your ears and should not be used for cleaning.
