Varun Chakravarthy credits domestic cricket resurgence.

Varun Chakravarthy, India’s premier T20 spinner, has credited his strong performances in domestic cricket as the main reason behind his recent resurgence in international cricket. The 33-year-old bowler, who played a crucial role in India’s victory in the first T20I against England, believes that his participation in domestic tournaments like the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) and Vijay Hazare Trophy helped him maintain rhythm and form after India’s South Africa tour. Chakravarthy, named Player of the Match in the first T20I, stressed how these domestic platforms play a significant role in honing a cricketer’s skills and preparing them for international competition.

During a press interaction in Chennai, Chakravarthy shared how high the level of competition in domestic cricket is. He remarked, “The level of cricket in domestic tournaments is very high. It is almost on par with the IPL and international matches we play.” These words reflect the intense competition faced by players in domestic cricket, which plays a pivotal role in their development. Chakravarthy also mentioned how playing in the SMAT, where matches are often held in smaller grounds, challenges bowlers to contain aggressive batting, making it a valuable preparation ground. “I would suggest everyone to play SMAT because it has been very helpful in making me more instinctive and aware at the right moments,” he added.

Chakravarthy’s performance in the domestic tournaments, including the SMAT, has played a key role in shaping his mindset for high-pressure T20Is. He highlighted how this season witnessed a record number of boundaries and sixes, which reflected India’s aggressive approach to white-ball cricket. For Chakravarthy, playing group matches in Mohali, Mullanpur, and Indore was ideal preparation for the pressure-filled T20I series against England. These experiences have helped him adjust to different conditions and adapt his strategies accordingly.

As the second T20I in Chennai approaches, it holds a special significance for Chakravarthy, as it marks his first international appearance at his home ground, the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk). “Playing for my country in front of my parents and the home crowd is very special to me,” Chakravarthy shared. His mystery spin has been an invaluable asset for India, especially with the absence of key players like Jasprit Bumrah. In the opening T20I, Chakravarthy’s unique spin variations helped dismantle England’s batting line-up and set the stage for India’s victory.
