Cinema: There is no star hero.

Released in theatres on May 5, 2023, The Kerala Story took everyone by surprise with its massive success. Made on a modest budget of Rs. 30 crore, the women-centric drama crossed the Rs. 300 crore mark globally—without the support of any mainstream star hero. With its emotionally intense storytelling and controversial theme, it became one of the most talked-about films of the year across India.

The film marked a turning point in Adah Sharma’s career. Her portrayal of Shalini, a girl manipulated into terrorism, won widespread appreciation. Audiences connected deeply with her emotional performance, leading to more impactful roles being offered to her in the film industry. In interviews, Adah herself credited the movie for transforming her image in cinema.

Directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the story follows three Kerala girls—Shalini, Nimah (Yogita Bihani), and Geetanjali (Siddhi Idnani)—whose lives are altered after meeting their roommate Asifa (Sonia Balani). The narrative explores how innocent girls are radicalized using love, fake promises, and manipulation. Shalini’s journey into Syria and being trained as a suicide bomber forms the heart-wrenching core of the story.

Despite receiving harsh criticism and being labeled Islamophobic, the film’s controversy fueled public interest. Several states banned it, but it only added to its popularity. Later released on OTT on February 16, 2024, the film enjoyed a second wave of viewership. Love it or hate it, The Kerala Story left a strong imprint on Indian cinema.
