The issue of casting couch remains a major concern in the film industry, with many harrowing stories coming to light about exploitation of aspiring actors and actresses. Fatima Sana Shaikh, the Bollywood actress known for her role in Dangal, recently opened up about her own experience with the dark side of the industry.
In a candid conversation during a podcast, Fatima shared her perspective, stating that, in every line of work, one encounters both good and bad people. She revealed that some individuals exploit their power for personal gain. Reflecting on one such encounter, she recalled a casting process where a person repeatedly asked her if she was “ready for everything,” despite her clear responses about her dedication to the role. Although frustrated, Fatima played along, hoping the person would state their intentions openly, but eventually, the conversation ended when the individual grew irritated.
She also spoke about an incident she faced in Hyderabad, explaining that there is a prevalent belief that doing well in the South could lead to better offers in Bollywood. Fatima shared how some producers in Hyderabad would ask inappropriate questions in a manner that was unsettling.
While Fatima acknowledged that not everyone in the industry behaves in this way, she emphasized that unfortunately, such instances do occur. She believes it is crucial for actors and actresses to speak out against such exploitation to bring about change.
