Krishnam Raju was one of the legendary actors who once ruled the Telugu film industry alongside Sr. NTR, Superstar Krishna, and Akkineni Nageswara Rao. These stalwarts not only achieved great success in their careers but also contributed to the growth of the Telugu film industry. Krishnam Raju, known as the “Rebel Star,” came from a royal family but pursued his passion for cinema. He officially entered the industry in 1966 with the film Chilaka Gorinka, which marked the beginning of his remarkable journey in Telugu cinema.
However, before his debut, Krishnam Raju had an earlier opportunity to become a hero, but a small mistake cost him the chance. At that time, renowned director Madhusudan Rao was making the film Veerabhimani with NTR in the lead role. Krishnam Raju was called for an audition and eagerly arrived at Madhusudan Rao’s office early in the morning. Since the director had not yet arrived, he waited for some time. While waiting, he took out a packet of 555 cigarettes, lit one, and placed the packet on the table before stepping out for a short while.
When Madhusudan Rao arrived at the office, he noticed the cigarette packet on the table. A little later, Krishnam Raju was called in. As soon as he entered, the director asked if the cigarette packet belonged to him. Krishnam Raju admitted that it was his, to which Madhusudan Rao immediately responded, “You can leave.” Surprised, Krishnam Raju asked why he was being dismissed despite waiting for so long. The director, who strongly disliked smoking, firmly stated that he could not tolerate smokers and would not cast him in his film.
Missing out on this golden opportunity, Krishnam Raju had to wait a few more years before making his debut with Chilaka Gorinka. Despite this early setback, he went on to become one of the most celebrated actors in Telugu cinema. His story remains a reminder of how even the smallest actions can sometimes have significant consequences in life.
