Venkatesh Maha: Rao Bahadur is neither a horror film nor a thriller

Satya Dev’s Rao Bahadur, directed by Venkatesh Maha and backed by Superstar Mahesh Babu, is set to hit theatres on July 3. The film has already drawn attention thanks to its striking promotional campaign, and the director has now offered a clearer idea of what audiences can expect from the story.

In a recent interview, Venkatesh Maha explained that the film should be viewed mainly as a psychological drama. “I will put it at the genre level. It’s a psychological drama. It’s not horror. It’s not a thriller. It’s a pure psychological drama. But it has sub-genres like magical realism and dark comedy. Story-wise, it showcases the journey of Bhuvanam Ramappa Rao Bahadur,” he said.

He added that the character’s path is unlike what viewers usually see in mainstream films. “His journey will be completely contrasting to the journeys of protagonists in other films. His want may look small, but that journey is very heroic. The audience will feel like they are reading a book. You will get to know a person inside out. It is almost like a biopic of this character,” Venkatesh Maha concluded.

With its unusual tone and character-focused storytelling, Rao Bahadur is shaping up as one of the more intriguing releases of the season.
