World Dog Surfing Championships: Canine champs rode impressive waves at the annual Pacifica event on Saturday, drawing hundreds of cheering spectators to the Northern California beach. The 10th edition of the World Dog Surfing Championships, held about 14 miles south of San Francisco, featured canines from small spaniels to large labs judged on wave size, balance duration, and overall confidence. Beyond the competition, the day included a pet adoption drive and fundraising for local animal welfare groups, making it a community celebration with a cause.
Dressed in colorful life vests and assisted by human spotters who guided them to the best waves, the dogs showcased their skills as applause erupted with every successful ride. The World Dog Surfing Championships judges awarded top scores across small, medium, and large dog heats, with the highest-scoring pups advancing to the final face-off. Tandem events also took center stage, where multiple dogs and even dogs with humans shared surfboards, adding to the day’s excitement.
Among the standout competitors was Rusty, a Miniature Pinscher from Huntington Beach, whose owner Sophia Sadlowski first placed him on a surfboard as a puppy for fun photos. “And then … he didn’t want to get off. I walk over to the beach, and I put him on a wave, and he surfed it,” Sadlowski said. Rusty, sporting a green animal-print life jacket with a shark fin and goggles, competed in the small-sized and tandem contests. Sadlowski shared that Rusty entered his first surf competition at just four months old, taking third place, and both are now cancer-free. “We got hooked,” she added.
The World Dog Surfing Championships continue to grow as a beloved tradition, blending athleticism, fun, and philanthropy.
