This marked India’s eighth weightlifting medal of the Games. Meanwhile, Seema Kaliramna battled through a rocky start in the women’s discus throw, recovering from an initial foul to secure bronze with a decisive 58.65m throw. Her compatriot Nidhi Rani finished agonizingly close in fourth place.
Athletics brought more encouraging news for India. Tejaswin Shankar ended day one of the decathlon in second place with 4,339 points, just 14 behind Olympic champion Damian Warner. All three Indian javelin throwers—Neeraj Chopra, Rohit Yadav, and Yash Vir Singh—qualified comfortably for the final, as did triple jumpers Praveen Chithravel and Selva Prabhu Thirumaran. However, mixed results followed in other events, with Tajinderpal Singh Toor finishing fifth in shot put and Vishal TK and Animesh Kujur failing to qualify in their respective sprints.
The day wasn’t without its disappointments, as India’s cycling campaign ended without finals and Nayanmoni Saikia lost in bowls. However, the men’s pairs team secured a vital win.
