Malavika Mohanan: Demanding More Female Gaze in Cinema
Malavika Mohanan: Demanding More Female Gaze in Cinema has become a crucial conversation in Bollywood. The actress, known for her role in The Raja Saab, recently stressed the urgent need for more female directors in an interview with Variety India. She pointed out that the lack of female writers and directors limits the variety of women’s roles in mainstream films. According to Malavika, the industry requires a stronger female gaze to create more authentic and powerful characters.
In her interview, Malavika explained how a greater female gaze could transform cinema. She stated, “We need a lot more of the female gaze. The moment we have more female makers, I am sure some of them would write cool action roles as well. And then we can have an Indian Kill Bill.” This vision highlights how women directors could bring fresh perspectives to traditional genres, offering complex roles beyond the typical stereotypes.
Malavika also praised Aamir Khan’s production Laapataa Ladies, noting how she loved the way female characters were written through the female gaze. She emphasized that the film succeeded because it captured women’s experiences authentically. The actress made it clear she wants to move away from flowerpot roles, which often lack depth, and instead seek projects that reflect a true female gaze.
In conclusion, Malavika Mohanan’s call for more female directors is a timely reminder of the need for diverse voices in cinema. Her demand for a stronger female gaze not only challenges current norms but also opens doors for stories that truly represent women. As the industry evolves, embracing this perspective could lead to richer, more inclusive storytelling.
