Reusable cloth pads need care: proper washing, drying, and storage are essential to prevent infections, warns obstetrician-gynaecologist Dr Ankita Shahasane. In a July 13 Instagram video, she highlighted that while reusable sanitary pads offer an eco-friendly alternative, they pose health risks if hygiene measures are ignored. “For years, we have told women not to use cloth during menstruation. And now, we’re back to cloth,” she noted, urging users to understand the maintenance requirements.
Dr Shahasane explained that the “antibacterial” label on reusable cloth pads depends on user care, not the fabric itself. “The antibacterial property is not in the fabric. It depends on how you wash, dry, and store the pad,” she said. Without proper sun-drying, bacteria and yeast can thrive, especially since blood provides ideal conditions for bacterial growth, similar to blood agar used in labs.
In Tier 2 and Tier 3 regions, social stigma can prevent women from sun-drying reusable sanitary pads, increasing infection risk. “Improper washing, drying, and storing can foster bacteria and yeast,” Dr Shahasane cautioned, advocating for education before promoting these products widely.
While supporting sustainability, Dr Shahasane stressed that menstrual hygiene must not be compromised. “Go green, but don’t compromise where science tells you to be careful,” she said. Users should prioritize hygiene practices to safely use reusable cloth pads as a sustainable option.
