Alexander Zverev: Reaches first Wimbledon final after French Open triumph. The German defeated British wildcard Arthur Fery 7-6 (7-0), 6-2, 6-4 on Friday to book his spot in the title match at the All England Club.
Alexander Zverev, fresh off winning his first Grand Slam title at the French Open, admitted Wimbledon had always been his toughest major. “This Grand Slam has always been the one that I struggled with the most and all of a sudden I’m in the final of Wimbledon,” the 29-year-old said. “We got one more match to go on Sunday and that’s what the focus is on.”
Alexander Zverev will face either defending champion Jannik Sinner or seven-time Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic in the final. He expressed confidence despite the difficult challenge ahead. “It’s not going to be easy no matter who it is against,” Zverev said. “But I have to trust myself and I have to believe that I can win and that’s what I’m going to do.”
The victory made Alexander Zverev the first German man to reach the Wimbledon final since Boris Becker in 1995. After the match, Zverev praised Fery, who is ranked 114th, and predicted a bright future for the young player. “I think this was just the beginning of his career and I really think that he’s going to do amazing things in this sport,” he said. Zverev also thanked the crowd for their fair support, saying, “I know that 99.99% of the stadium was wanting Arthur to win. But it was still such an incredible atmosphere.”
Alexander Zverev now stands just one win away from lifting the Wimbledon trophy, completing a remarkable turnaround at a tournament he once found most challenging.
