The Telugu film industry has seen many instances of films getting delayed or shelved for various reasons. Some films face financial hurdles, while others are paused due to unforeseen circumstances. However, one movie stands out for being released 40 years after its production was completed—long after its lead actor had passed away.
This unique film, Prapravalu, features the legendary Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR). The movie, directed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao and starring ANR, Jayasudha, and Tulsi, faced numerous delays. Tragically, by the time of its release, ANR was no longer alive—having passed away over 90 years after his illustrious career began.
The Journey of Prapravalu
The production of Prapravalu began under Singeetham Srinivasa Rao’s direction, with ANR in the lead role alongside Jayasudha as the heroine. However, ANR suffered a heart attack during filming, requiring surgery and a lengthy recovery period. The director, unable to wait due to other commitments, handed over the project to Danta Raghavendra Rao’s father, Prakasa Rao, who managed to complete the film.
Despite being completed, the movie was shelved due to financial difficulties faced by the producer, Jagarlamudi Radhakrishna. Over time, Prapravalu faded from public memory.
A Posthumous Release
Decades later, Prapravalu was rediscovered and prepared for release on November 5, 2022, to coincide with ANR’s birth anniversary. The movie was restored with modern technology, including color enhancements, and was screened in over 250 theaters. Unfortunately, the film did not receive significant publicity, leading to limited audience attention despite its historical importance.
A Legacy Remembered
The release of Prapravalu serves as a reminder of ANR’s unparalleled contribution to Telugu cinema. While the movie might not have gained widespread recognition, it stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of one of Indian cinema’s greatest actors.
