Story:

John D’Silva (Varun Dhawan) lives happily with his daughter Khushi (Zara Gianna) in Alappuzha, Kerala. In John’s life, as Khushi gets closer to teacher Tara (Vamika Gabbi), an unexpected incident reveals who he is. Tara discovers that Mumbai-based DCP Sathyavarma has now become John after believing everyone to be dead. Why did Satya Varma portray himself as dead? What is he running away from? Who is Nanaji? What is the story behind John’s feud with him? To know that, you have to watch the movie on the silver screen.

Plus Points:

Varun Dhawan has given a good performance as a powerful police officer and a father. His looks and physique are set to suit his role. He gives solid performance in most of the scenes.

Vamika Gabbi surprises the audience. Vamika was seen in the role of Amy Jackson in the movie ‘Theri’. However, she got a lot of depth to her character in this film. She not only impresses in terms of looks but also impresses with her performance.

Keerthy Suresh as always impressed with her performance. Despite a small role, Keerthy gave a memorable performance to the audience. Jackie Shroff is another plus point for this movie.

Minus Points:

It has been eight years since Vijay starrer ‘Theri’ came out. In terms of emotional action, this movie has achieved good recognition among the audience. However, while remaking such a movie, the story should have been developed more. The characters in the movie should also be written more strongly. As the story of Makki Ki Makki was remade and the scenes and shots were not changed at all, the audience wondered what was new in this movie.

The emotion and action of the original movie are on par. However, it must be said that even though they were seen in this film, they did not click at the right time. Attlee’s handling of emotion in the original version impressed the audience. However, the emotion in this film falls very flat.

Varun Dhawan looks good in his role, but if he had immersed himself a little more in the emotional scenes, they would have been better. His love track with Keerthy Suresh is also not very impressive.

Although Jackie Shroff’s character appears strong at first, it turns dull as the story progresses. Jackie Shroff appears to be presented more as a powerful don than a corrupt politician. A couple of songs were catchy but they didn’t make much of an impact.

A major minus point in this film is that the emotion of the two deaths which are the turning points are not used properly. The way Atlee directed these two scenes in the original movie. GV Prakash’s music was shown at the next level. But in this they miss both.

Technical Department:

Director Kalis has shot ‘Baby John’ very carefully. But, he could not properly present the point of emotional depth which is crucial for the movie. If he had focused more on this, this movie would have been a big hit. However, the writing team who designed the characters of Vamika Gabbi, Rajpal Yadav and Jackie Shroff in this movie should be appreciated.

Thaman’s BGM is solid. However, if you have seen his previous films, it seems that you have heard the score used for this film somewhere. Cinematography by Kiran Kaushik is good. The production values are very rich. The editing work is good in the first half but could have been better in the second half.

Verdict:

Overall, ‘Baby John’ is somewhat impressive as an action packed emotional drama movie. Varun Dhawan has done well in two shades of roles. Keerthy Suresh impresses in her role. While Wamika Gabbi impresses, Jackie Shroff fails to impress. Kalis and Thaman will impress with their performance in this film which is a xerox copy of ‘Theri’. Even so, ‘Baby John’ cannot match the original film. This film will appeal to those who like routine mass action and some emotional scenes.
